Lecco and the manzonian itinerary

In the city following the Manzoni’s steps
Lecco is a small city abounding with literary mementoes thanks to the countless reminiscences taken from Manzoni’s masterpiece.
Tourists are advised to walk around these sights which tradition has destined as the theatrical setting for “I Promessi Sposi”.
This itinerary is an interesting proposal for students who wish to further study of Manzoni and his main novel.

Must see is Villa Manzoni that was his summer residence and now is the house of the Muse Manzoniano. The itinerary continues to Pescarenico, the old fishermen neighborhood and expressly mentioned in the novel.
Don’t forget also the old neighborhood in the highest part of Lecco: Olate with the “Lucia’s House” and Acquate seat of the “palazzotto di Don Rodrigo”.

DAY 1
Visit of Villa Manzoni
The country-house of Manzoni family until 1818. It became property of the Town Hall of Lecco in 1960. Now the Villa is a museum of Manzoni’s records about his life and his main novel “I Promessi Sposi”.

Every first Sunday of the month possibilities of guided tours
Opening hours: open all year round from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; closed on Monday and main holidays

Visit of Visconti Tower
It was the main tower of the castle built by Azzone Visconti in 14th Century. In 17th century was the seat of the Spanish army. Now is a temporary exhibition area.

Discovering Pescarenico
It’s the only neighborhood explicity mentionated in Promessi Sposi. In 17th century was inhabited by families who practiced fishing in the area between Lecco and Garlate. It’s the neighborhood that has best preserved the features of the past.

Excursion to the Castle of Innominato
It was a defense castle between the Milan area and the republic of Venice. Legend tells that It was the castle where lived the famous character of the “I Promessi Sposi”. Now It is reduced to ruins but there’s stille the sactuary built inside. The view of Lecco and Garlate Lake is amazing.

Estimated time of visiting: 1hr and 30min
Transfer: by public bus (line N. 1) or by own transport to the Castle of Innominato in Vercurago (5Km East direction Bergamo). The castle can be reached only by walking along an easy path borderei by chapels
